1st hantavirus case of the year reported in The Araucanía Region

The Regional Ministerial Health Secretariat confirms the first case of Hantavirus infection of the year in La Araucanía in central Chile, according to the results delivered by the Molecular Virology Laboratory of the Austral University of Valdivia.

The patient is a 56-year-old male patient, residing in the rural area of the district of Victoria, according to a Canal de Noticias report (computer translated).

The man began the symptoms around January 17, consulting on Friday, January 19 at the Hospital San José de Victoria, where he performed the rapid test for detection of hantavirus, which was positive.

The samples were derived to the Laboratory of Molecular Virology of the Austral University of Valdivia, where it was finally confirmed as Hantavirus, becoming the first case of hantavirus of the year 2018 in our region.

Currently the patient is in good health, admitted to the Guillermo Grant Benavente Hospital in Concepción, without oxygen requirement.

The epidemiology and zoonoses teams of the Health Seremis of Bío Bío and Araucanía are carrying out the corresponding investigation to determine the possible place of infection.

The Health Authority calls on the population to take precautionary measures against Hantavirus infection to prevent transmission to those who work and live in rural areas.
