The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security is offering an expenses-paid fellowship for emerging biosecurity leaders from around the world to attend SynBioBeta 2018: The Global Synthetic Biology Summit and exclusive side events Oct. 1-4 in San Francisco.

The program is sponsored by the Open Philanthropy Project and will run in conjunction with SynBioBeta. It covers the cost of conference registration, travel, lodging, food, and transportation for up to 30 accepted fellows who will also have the opportunity to engage with peers and senior leaders at special Center-organized events on the nexus of biosecurity and synthetic biology.

Applicants should be early- to mid-career professionals or graduate students working in synthetic biology, biosecurity, public health policy, defense/security policy, or related fields in the United States or abroad. Prospective fellows who are not US citizens will need to obtain a visitor visa (if required by the US Department of State) in time to attend and take part in the fellowship program. Applications will be reviewed by staff at the Center.

Fellows will be expected to attend the full fellowship program and all fellowship side events during the conference. Any fellows wishing to obtain a certificate of completion from the Center will also be required to submit a short written reflection on the meeting and fellowship opportunity after the conclusion of the event.

To apply, submit the following materials to this application site by Wednesday, Aug. 15, before 11:59 p.m. EDT:

  • Biographical information as specified in the form
  • 1-page statement (600-word maximum) addressing:
    • Your background and career focus
    • Your interest in biosecurity as it relates to the field of synthetic biology
    • Why you think being a biosecurity fellow will benefit you and the world
  • A reference whom the Center may contact to verify credentials and eligibility

Accepted fellows will receive an email notification by Friday, Aug. 24.
