The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (June 3) investigating two cases of Legionnaires’ disease (LD).

The first case involves an 81-year-old man with underlying illnesses. He presented with fever and cough and sputum since May 30. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Tseung Kwan O Hospital (TKOH) on June 1 and was admitted on the same day. His clinical diagnosis is pneumonia. He is currently in serious condition.

His urine sample tested positive for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen upon laboratory testing by TKOH.

Initial enquiries by the CHP revealed that the patient had no recent travel history. His home contacts are asymptomatic. Investigations are proceeding.

The second case involves a 60-year-old man with underlying illnesses. He presented with fever and shortness of breath since May 28. He was admitted to Caritas Medical Centre on May 29 and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on June 2 for further management. His clinical diagnosis is pneumonia. He is currently in critical condition.

His urine sample tested positive for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen upon testing by Princess Margaret Hospital.

Investigations are proceeding.

These are the 16th and 17th LD cases reported to the CHP this year. In 2014 and 2013, 41 and 28 cases were recorded respectively.
