According to the India Ministry of Health, the COVID-19 death toll has topped the 500,000 mark today, becoming the third country to eclipse that total.
After reporting 1072 additional deaths, the death toll has reached 500,055.
Despite the large number, experts believe the number may be much higher due to underreporting. Some believe India actually reached 500,000 deaths last year when it was hit by a devastating rise in Delta variant cases.
India has reported some 42 million total cases since the start of the pandemic.
The United States and Brazil have crossed the 500,000 death threshold previously with 897,000 and 630,000 reported, respectively.
