Two new Zika cases have been confirmed in Miami-Dade County, according to the Florida Department of Health’s Daily Zika update today.

This brings the total in the state to 44. Counties reporting cases were: Alachua, Brevard, Broward (6), Hillsborough (3), Lee (3), Miami-Dade (19), Orange (3), Osceola, St. Johns, Santa Rosa, and Seminole. Four of the 44 cases involve pregnant women whose counties of residence are not included in the individual county totals to protect privacy.
All cases are travel-associated. There have been no locally-acquired cases of Zika in Florida. Of the travel-related cases confirmed in Florida, only five cases are still exhibiting symptoms. According to the CDC, symptoms associated with the Zika virus last between seven to 10 days.
Countries of origin were: Brazil (4), Colombia (10), Costa Rica, El Salvador (2), Haiti (8), Honduras (3), Honduras/Guatemala, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico (3), and Venezuela (9), as of Feb. 27.
According to the CDC, Zika illness is generally mild with a rash, fever and joint pain. CDC researchers are examining a possible link between the virus and harm to unborn babies exposed during pregnancy.
