In a follow-up to an earlier report, Kent County Health Department officials have a confirmed positive case of mumps on the Calvin College campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
School officials say that this means that students who have not been vaccinated are being offered a choice between being vaccinated or being isolated according to the recommendations of the Kent County Health Department. The Health Services staff has reached out to all unvaccinated students to go over their options.
For those students who have chosen to receive a vaccination, Health Services has made them available on campus Friday afternoon.
For those students who have chosen not to be vaccinated, our Housing staff is working on an accommodation plan for them. Students are also receiving contact information for Academic Services, so that plans can be developed for course and exam completion.
Health Services at Calvin continues to work closely with the Kent County Health Department, whose expertise and protocols have been helpful. We will notify the Kent County Health Department about the updated status of all unvaccinated students, so that the department can follow their additional protocols for notifying others who may be impacted by the situation.
Mumps is a contagious disease caused by a virus. It typically starts with a few days of fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite, followed by swollen salivary glands. You can protect yourself and your family against mumps with vaccination.
As of April 29, 2016, the CDC reports 727 mumps cases nationally.
