Polio: The last wild poliovirus case reported in India seven years ago today

Indian subcontinent/CIA

In 1985, 150,000 cases of wild poliovirus (WPV) cases were reported in India alone. That’s very hard to imagine in this day when the global wild poliovirus (WPV) case tally was only 21–in Afghanistan (13) and Pakistan (8).

It was on this day in 2011 when the last polio case was reported in India and the WHO South-East Region when a 2-year-old girl in the West Bengal state contracted the crippling disease.

A little over three years later on Mar 27, 2014, the region was certified polio free.

WHO South-East Region says this tremendous achievement would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of health workers across the Region.

It is an incredible achievement and we all thank and congratulate all the great work being done in polio eradication.
