A person staying in Sörmland has been tested and found to carry the new variant of the virus SARS-CoV-2. Infection tracing started immediately and the risk of infection spreading due to the case is considered to be very low.

Infection control Sörmland has been in contact with the person concerned. The person in question has acted completely according to the recommendations even before symptoms. The person in question is not in need of hospital care and follows the instructions so as not to carry the infection further, says Signar Mäkitalo, infection control doctor in Sörmland.

The person who has been tested positive for the virus traveled to Sörmland from the UK for a visit over Christmas.

The UK has recently reported that a new variant of the covid-19 virus, called VOC202012 / 01, has been spreading in the country since September. The variant is believed to have an increased dispersal ability compared to other variants, but analyzes of its properties are still ongoing.

It was not unexpected. We know that this variant has existed in the UK since September and it has also been reported from other countries in Europe in the form of isolated cases, says Karin Tegmark Wisell, head of department at the Swedish Public Health Agency.

It is too early to draw any conclusions about the significance of the find for Sweden.

This is a first single case, it says nothing in this situation if the variant would have been spread. We continue with the expanded analyzes to see if we can find more cases. But I want to emphasize that it is important that everyone follows the advice and recommendations we have to reduce the spread of covid-19 in society, says Karin Tegmark Wisell.

On 21 December, the government decided on a ban on entry from the United Kingdom due to the spread of infection and new variants of the coronavirus that have been reported from there.

The Swedish Public Health Agency has decided to urge visitors to stay at home for at least seven days after arriving in Sweden and avoid contact with others as far as possible. The invitation applies to all entrants who have stayed in the UK from 12 December.
