Ukraine: More than 27,000 measles cases in 7 months

In a follow-up on the measles outbreak in Ukraine, the Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine reports 822 cases in week 30 of 2018, bringing the case total to 27,502 this year.

The good news is Ukraine officials are reporting a 7 percent decrease in cases compared to the previous week.

The outbreak has affected 11,142 adults and 16,360 children. In a addition, 13 measles related fatalities have been reported–nine children and four adults.

Lviv still accounts for the most cases (5,260) followed by Zakarpattya region,  Ivano-Frankivsk region and Odessa.

The capital and largest city of Ukraine, Kiev or Kyiv reports 1,885 measles cases this year.

In late June, the Ministry of Health approved the Order for free immunization of adults belonging to risk groups. This decision was made in connection with an increase in the incidence of measles among adults.

In accordance with the said order during 2018, mandatory preventive vaccination against measles is provided for epidemic indications:

As of July 27, 2018, 720,000 vaccine doses are available in Ukraine.
