The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is reporting an imported case of chikungunya virus in a traveler returning from the Dominican Republic, according to an El Universal report yesterday (computer translated). The case was laboratory confirmed according to health officials.
Director General of Environmental Health, Jesús Toro said, “The Bolivarian Government rapidly carried out detection of this illness through epidemiological work carried out when it was realized the patient had the common symptoms: very high fever and very intense pain due to inflammation of the joints. The patient is now receiving appropriate treatment.”
Toro continued, “The early detection of this case demonstrates the efficient actions of the Bolivarian Government in our country’s epidemiological surveillance.”
