The dengue fever epidemic in Vietnam continues to escalate as the Southeast Asian country has seen a whopping 85 percent increase in cases this year compared to the same period in 2014.
Local media puts the outbreak at 40,000 confirmed dengue cases, including 25 deaths. HCM City has the highest number of patients of 9,000.
The National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi has reportedly been struggling with the large influx of dengue patients, as have other facilities throughout the country. On average, about 50 to 100 patients are hospitalized for dengue fever each day. The number of the patients has been increasing day by day.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Health urged local administrations to enhance environment cleaning up twice a week to kill mosquitoes and its larva in “hot spots” of dengue fever and once a month in other places.
In addition, to reduce mortality rate, the Ministry of Health is warning people not to treat themselves at home but go to nearby medical facilities when they experience symptoms of dengue fever such as fever in three days, pain in muscles and belly, vomiting.
