The number of laboratory and clinically confirmed and suspected Zika virus cases in Colombia since last October has increased by an additional 5456 cases during the past week, bringing the total cases to 37,011, according to health ministry data.
Cases have been reported in 33 of the 37 governmental entities with the highest frequency of reported cases being observed in the Caribbean region.
67% of cases of Zika virus disease has occurred in females and the number of pregnant women infected with Zika now stands at 6,356. Norte de Santander has reported the most cases in pregnant women with more than 1,700.
In Brazil, the government has deployed the military to help fight the rapidly spreading Zika virus and now they are dusting off the drones for the battle against the mosquito vector.
According to an Economic Times report, Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, is flying drones over shuttered residences to check for signs of the mosquito in gardens, terraces and other places where they might breed.
Equipped with video cameras, the drones allow operators to spot potential breeding sites from air.
