Previously, on April 30, patient Sung Thi L. was taken to the emergency room at Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital with a high fever of 39 degrees, accompanied by symptoms suspected of having diphtheria.

Doctors of Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital had an interdisciplinary consultation and diagnosed the patient with sepsis, respiratory failure, pneumonia, monitoring myocarditis, not excluding diphtheria – severe prognosis and treated. fluids, antibiotics.

After about 1 hour, the patient stopped circulating, had respiratory failure, severe pneumonia, pulmonary edema, and was monitored for myocarditis, not excluding diphtheria. After 30 minutes of performing CPR, the patient died.

Immediately after grasping the information, the functional forces of Dien Bien Dong district carried out disinfecting the environment around the house, school and the patient’s residence (classroom, boarding area, blankets, etc.) ).

Initially, the total number of close contacts with the patient was 78 people (including 5 people in the patient’s family; 18 students in the same class, 38 students in the same boarding area and 17 medical staff). at Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital).

In addition, at the Ethnic Minority Semi-boarding High School – Pu Nhi Primary School (Dien Bien Dong District, Dien Bien Province) – where the patient studied – there were a total of 347 students (including 99 students in boarding schools). ) and 28 teachers were also included in the monitoring of symptoms for timely detection.

It is known that this is the first case of diphtheria detected in Dien Bien province in many years.
