In a follow-up on the first polio case reported in Israel since 1989, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) provides more details:
On Monday 7 March 2022, a case of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 3 (cVDPV3) was confirmed in an unvaccinated girl aged three years and nine months in Israel. The girl had developed acute flaccid paralysis and upon testing of her stool, poliovirus was confirmed.
Further testing of the poliovirus isolated from the girl revealed genetic links to VDPV3-strains detected in environmental samples collected from sites in in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory between September 2021 and January 2022. These isolates, previously classified as ambiguous VDPV3, have now been reclassified as circulating VDPV3 (cVDPV3). This confirms an outbreak of cVDPV3 in both Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory.
In addition, the Israel Ministry of Health reported Thursday (computer translated):
Ministry of Health, found evidence of the polio virus (polio) in two additional stool samples from Jerusalem and its surroundings. So far – a case of a sick child in Jerusalem and two samples with preliminary evidence of the polio virus in Jerusalem and its surroundings.
One sample was taken as part of the epidemiological investigation conducted by the Jerusalem District Health Bureau into contacts of the child who is ill with the polio virus. The child is asymptomatic. As part of the investigation, 3 samples were found that were negative, as well as 19 samples that are being tested by the Central Virus Laboratory.
Another positive sample is from an anonymous stool survey conducted in Jerusalem and its surroundings.
The Ministry of Health is expanding the investigation, stool tests in the Jerusalem area and the sewer sampling in Jerusalem and other centers in the country.
The Ministry of Health again calls on parents to ensure that their children are vaccinated according to the guidelines and to vaccinate those who have not yet been vaccinated.
