For the fourth consecutive day, Japan has reported in excess of 1,000 COVID-19 cases as the resurgence of the virus sweeps the island country bringing the total to 38,199 cases and 1012 deaths.

On Saturday, 1,532 new coronavirus infections were reported including nearly 500 in Tokyo, prompting the metro city government to raise its alert for the pandemic to the highest of the four levels, meaning “infections are spreading,”
Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike warned that an emergency may be declared for the city.
Japan’s nationwide state of emergency ended in May.
Other hotspots besides Tokyo include Osaka and Aichi prefectures.
