The Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, TX announced a couple of hours ago that the 1st diagnosed Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the United States has died.

According to a statement from the hospital:

It is with profound sadness and heartfelt disappointment that we must inform you of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at 7:51 a.m.

Mr. Duncan succumbed to an insidious disease, Ebola. He fought courageously in this battle.

Our professionals, the doctors and nurses in the unit, as well as the entire Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas community, are also grieving his passing. We have offered the family our support and condolences at this difficult time.

The Liberian man arrived in the US on Sept.20 and first felt ill on Sept. 24. He sought medical care at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas on Sept. 26; however, due to a myriad of mix-ups, Duncan was sent home with antibiotics.

After developing symptoms consistent with Ebola, he was admitted to hospital on Sept. 28. Testing performed by the CDC and the Texas DSHS confirmed he was positive for Ebolavirus on Sept. 30.

To date, their are 5 people under legal quarantine, 4 family members and a homeless man and as of Tuesday, 48 contacts and possible contacts are under surveillance.
