In an update on the measles outbreak in Ukraine, 45 additional people became ill with measles during the past week, which includes 18 adults and 27 children. During the week most new measles cases were registered in Chernivtsi, Vinnytsia and Odesa regions.

Since the summer of 2017, more than 115,000 people have contracted measles, 41 of whom have died.

Diphtheria vaccination coverage

Ukraine health officials report as of October 1, 2019, 59.5% of children under the age of one year and 52.3% of the adults envisaged by the scheduled vaccination were vaccinated in Ukraine. In total, only 200,000 children under the age of one year and 1.5 million adults were vaccinated during this period.

The purpose of vaccination is to create immunity against diphtheria. Immunity prevents severe disease and reduces the incidence of the disease. For collective immunity, 95% of the population should be vaccinated against the disease.

Vaccines are available free of charge in the vaccination offices.
