The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) reports the first wild poliovirus 1 (WPV1) case of the year in a four-year-old child in Nangarhar province, according to a local media report.

MoPH said a sub-national immunization campaign against polio in selected districts will be launched on Monday.
This is the first WPV1 case reported in Afghanistan in 2023 and the second case reported globally (March 2023 in Bannu, Pakistan). Last polio case in Afghanistan was reported from Dara-e Pech District of Kunar on August 29, 2022.
The only two countries in the world where wild poliovirus remains endemic are Pakistan and Afghanistan, while 99% of the world has eradicated the disease.
