The Egyptian Ministry of Health has in the past two consecutive days confirmed two additional human H5N1 avian influenza (AI) cases, one from Helwan governorate of Cairo and one from Asyut province (computer translated).

These cases represent the 25th and 26th cases of the year in the north African country.

The Cairo case is a 42-year-old male who first presented with symptoms on Dec. 23. He arrived at the the hospital three days later from fever, cough and diarrhea. H5N1 AI was confirmed that same day. The patient is in stable condition.

In Asyut province, a 51-year-old reported suffering from fever, cough, vomiting, hard to breathe and after chest x-ray, what diagnosed with double pneumonia.

He was taken to the hospital on Dec. 24 and put into isolation. This patient is also in stable condition.

in 2014 to date, Egypt has reported 26 cases of H5N1 AI with ten deaths, 12 patients recovering and 4 patients currently being treated.
