The Philippines Department of Health recorded 2,539 additional  COVID-19 cases today, putting the total case for the country above 50,000.  DOH said 617 of the newly reported cases are “late” or results belatedly reported that were only verified recently, while 1,922 are “fresh cases” or results released to the patients within the past three days.

The total now stands at 50,359. In addition, five additional deaths were reported and that total is 1134.

Of the 1922 “fresh cases”, 883 are from the Manila area, or the National Capital Region.

Speaking on the increases in cases, particularly in Manila, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said community transmission and the increased testing capacity account for the higher figures. Vergeire does note that the Philippines  is not experiencing a second wave of the virus.

“We are not experiencing a second wave but an increase in the number of positive cases due to the increase in testing and because there is community transmission because of the lack of implementation of minimum health standards,” she said.
