Officials with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) reported three additional wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases in the past week–one in Afghanistan and two in Pakistan.

In Afghanistan, one WPV1 case was reported in the past week from Ghorak district in Kandahar province. The onset of paralysis was on 12 January 2019. This the second WPV1 case reported in 2019 to date.
Pakistan saw two cases of WPV1 this week: one in Hangu district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and one in Lahore district in Punjab province. The onset of paralysis for both cases was on 20 January 2019. The total number of WPV1 cases this year is four.
This brings the total WPV1 reported globally in 2019 to six.
Polio in Indonesia: 1st case in over a decade
In addition, each country reported four WPV1-positive environmental samples.
The third polio endemic nation, Nigeria, saw its last WPV1 case from Borno state in Aug. 2016.
