In 1985, 150,000 cases of wild poliovirus (WPV) cases were reported in India alone. That’s very hard to imagine in this day when the global wild poliovirus (WPV) case tally was only 21–in Afghanistan (13) and Pakistan (8).
It was on this day in 2011 when the last polio case was reported in India and the WHO South-East Region when a 2-year-old girl in the West Bengal state contracted the crippling disease.
A little over three years later on Mar 27, 2014, the region was certified polio free.
