For several days in a row, Bangladesh health officials have reported in excess of 1,000 dengue cases daily, including 1,239 cases today, as the rise in dengue cases take an “alarming turn”.

The case tally has risen to 17,382 total cases since the beginning of the year, including more than 9,400 cases in July to date alone.

In addition, the death toll has risen to 93 with the addition of 5 deaths today, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The total number of deaths from dengue was 281 last year while the total number of cases was 62,382, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The DGHS has asked the public to follow some guidelines to combat the dengue outbreak:

  • consult doctors on suspicion of dengue after seeing symptoms alongside 104 degree body temperature. These are — severe headache, pain in the back of the eyes, muscle and joint ache, nausea and rash.
  • keep the doors and windows of houses and offices shut and covering the body to avoid mosquito bites.
  • water should not be allowed to accumulate in the field or on the road in and around the house or in any place. Standing water in containers must be thrown out
  • unused containers should be turned aside and mosquito nets should be used during the day and night
