In a follow-up on the diphtheria situation in Ukraine, the Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine is reporting new case (computer translated), the fourth case of diphtheria in country, which was recorded in the Chernihiv region.

The case is a a 11-year-old boy who presented with a swollen neck and a suspicion of a diphtheria. He was ill at home for 5 days before arriving at the Central district hospital of Nizhyn region.

He was given anti-diphtheria serum and his condition is serious and he is now in intensive care.

The investigation continues and a team of epidemiologists will leave tomorrow to the village where the boy lives, who will conduct a contact survey, assess the threats and determine if additional measures are needed, such as prophylactic treatment or vaccination.


The MOH recommends to make necessary vaccinations against diphtheria as soon as possible for children and adults. A high-quality and safe vaccine is available in all regions of Ukraine and is provided free of charge for both children and adults.

In Ukraine, a sufficient number of vaccines and anti-diphtheria serums are available in all areas.
