On the Aug. 7 airing of the Outbreak News This Week Radio Show, Zika was the topic of the hour. The local transmission in the Miami area, the underreporting of Zika due to asymptomatic cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) advice for people living and traveling to the affected area of Miami and more topics were looked at during the first half.

During the second half, virologist and Columbia University Professor of Microbiology of Immunology, Vincent Racaniello, PhD discussed his thoughts on the Zika situation in the Miami area and a possible “bigger picture”. We dabbled in Washington politics and why he believes that Congress fails on Zika virus.

Dr Racaniello gave a good update on the progress towards a Zika vaccine and the number of types being worked on.

We also got an update from “Zika Diaries“, where he chronicles the start up of a Zika virus research laboratory.
